Despite living in relative obscurity, pangolins are the most illegally trafficked wild mammal in the world. Their name is from the Malayan language: "pengguling" means one who rolls up.
This enchanting and endangered species does not live on Mustique. In fact, the most similar native animal is the armadillo and these are considered pests to the farmers of St. Vincent. Although the two mammals are a little similar to look at with their scaly backs, the Pangolin is actually more closely related to dogs, cats and bears than it is to the Armadillo!
The inspiration for this gorgeous Pangolin print doesn't come from the fauna of Mustique, but from the beautiful villa itself, dramatically situated on its own hilltop in the North East of Mustique Island, with magnificent views over Macaroni Beach.

We talked to Lotty about this and she told us the following:
"When I was commissioned to design a fabric for Pangolin villa, my interest in this shy, magical creature was definitely piqued.
It brought me full circle: starting with my childhood in Africa; my later travels through Zimbabwe where I first met Patrick Mavros and was introduced to his stunning silver works; later collaborating with Patrick's sons and showcasing their silver and jewellery collections in the Pink House; seeing the stunning works of Adrian Steirn on the walls of Pangolin Villa on Mustique.

It didn't take me long to realise the link between Dunton Destinations, Adrian Steirn, The Tikki Hywood Foundation and Patrick Mavros Junior’s pangolin-inspired jewellery collection - what a small world!

My bespoke fabric design for Pangolin villa sparked the idea of using the pangolin as inspiration for my latest furnishing fabric design and ultimately in downsizing the print to add to our resort wear collection of 2025 for swimming trunks, linen shirts and women’s dresses.
Having read more about the Tikki Hywood Foundation, we will be donating to their incredible charity through this collection."
A 10% donation from each purchase of any item from the Pangolin linen and swim collection will be made to the Tikki Hywood Foundation: a non-profit, wildlife orientated organisation. It strives to bring recognition, awareness and sustainable conservation action to lesser known endangered species, such as the highly endangered Pangolin.
Dunton Destinations is a collection of extraordinary, secluded, unique resorts and homes situated in the most striking locations. Find out more about Pangolin villa here.
